Day 18: Discussing first love

Do I really want to discuss my first love publicly? No, not really, but I can tell a completely random story about something that may or may not have anything to do with the topic.

There was once a 14-year-old girl, who saw a boy in a school play. He had the leading role as a pessimistic troll of the forest, and the girl in the audience was having a celebrity crush moment. Quite the detective she was, she figured out his name. I guess it wasn't that difficult, considering it was printed in every pamphlet of the play and everyone knew who he was. Because he had such a rare both first and last name, she took out the good ol' telephone book — which in that time was still frequently used — and found out there were around fifteen phone numbers in the city with his last name. Because he was 16, his number was obviously under his parents' names.

The girl would take the first number and call. Without hesitation, she asked the person who picked up the phone if "K" was home. Everyone in the telephone book, who picked up the phone, said they had never heard of that person before, so the girl apologized and said she must have the wrong number. Everyone said this, until the boy's father answered the phone. The father told the girl that his son lives with his mother. He gave the girl the right number and she called him.

The girl and the boy would speak on the phone for about a week without him knowing who she was. He knew she went to his school, he knew which class she attended and he knew her name. He would show up in front of her classrooms to see if he could figure her out in the crowd. In the end he did and then he asked her out.

This relationship lasted for about a year and a half, which was really good considering how young those two were. They both knew they had the entire world before them and they were too young to be in such a committed relationship for much longer.

Only a few weeks ago the girl heard through her mother that the boy's father, who had become a friend of the girl's parents as well, had passed away. The girl thought about reaching out to him to tell him condolences. But she never did, because she didn't want to intrude. I can only imagine how deeply sorry she feels for him about his father's sudden passing. This now may be her condolences to him.
